ACADEMY: What to Look Out for When Looking for an HMUA Training Course

If you’re at the beginning of your hair and makeup artist career, it is so worthwhile to get a helping hand and a nudge in the right direction. An MUA training course is a great investment into your future career and will give your new clients complete confidence in you to do a fantastic job.

Courses usually cover makeup basics from creating the perfect base, right through to classic smokey eyes, bridal and contouring techniques. They’re usually hands-on intensive courses, focused on allowing you to acquire the techniques to begin creating your own makeup looks, to hopefully become one of the most in-demand makeup artists in the industry.

Problem is…there’s a lot to choose from! So, what should you look out for when researching an HMUA training course? I’ll give you a rundown.

Who are they?

Sad to say, but it’s quite easy to set up a training programme these days – and many people do! You need to look at who will be running the course. Check out their socials – who are they and what are their own credentials? Look especially for reviews of people who have already undertaken the training!

What do you get?

Does the cost match the content? If you’re paying an absolute premium for some general content, you’ll need to take a step back. It’s unfortunate, but some people don’t have your best interests at heart and are here to make money from fledgling artists. Look for a course that offers value for money and return on investment.

Is it your vibe?

Don’t go signing up for an amazing course led by a great practitioner…if it’s natural makeup and you want to be a glam artist. Check out who is running the course and especially look into the actual content of the MUA course. Don’t be disappointed!

Can you do it?

There’s no point spending money on a HMUA course if you are unable to commit to it. Some courses are in-person only, where some are completely remote. Some are a bit of both! Assess your own situation with your work / home life and look into what will work best for you.

I’m a luxury bridal hair and makeup artist who has undertaken many training courses in my time. I now run my own! I want to allow all students to bring out the best in themselves and to have the potential to become an industry leading artist in their own right.

Rather than keeping the same content, we are constantly evolving our techniques – we strive for greatness and we thrive from results. We ensure we simplify our steps and break down our application and technique steps so that our students – regardless of their starting their knowledge skills – leave with the highest standards of application, making them powerful in any makeup field.
